Maykel Blanco y su Salsa Mayor is one of the most prominent bands in the modern Timba landscape, known for their bright piano textures, relentless groove, and crowd-shaking energy on stage. Formed in the mid-2000s by pianist and percussionist Maykel Blanco, the group represents a new generation of Cuban dance music—what Maykel himself describes as “ Songo y Son Moderno… pero a nuestro estilo”. Having been formally trained as a percussionist, Maykel builds on Pupy Pedroso’s tumbao style, treating the piano like a drum and putting his own spin on the Songo-style rhythmic framework.
