PUPY Y LOS QUE SON SON
Pupy y Los Que Son Son was formed by pianist and composer César “Pupy” Pedroso in 2001, after his departure from Los Van Van, the band he helped define for over three decades. While he retained his signature contrary motion tumbao style— he opted for a different instrumental format, moving away from the traditional Charanga setup of Los Van Van and shifting towards a more contemporary Timba setup, incorporating trumpets and phasing out strings and flute as standard timbres. The band’s rhythmic identity was also shaped by the contributions of José Luis “Changuito” Quintana, whose pioneering work on drums and percussion helped the new band establish a distinct sello—a recognisable percussive fingerprint that blends Songo’s innovation with the drive of modern Timba.
