LOS VAN VAN
Los Van Van, founded by bassist and composer Juan Formell in 1969, is one of the most influential and enduring bands in the history of Cuban music.
Often referred to as “El Tren de la Música Cubana,” the group pioneered the Songo rhythm with the help of drummer José Luis “Changuito” Quintana, whose groundbreaking integration of drum set, timbales, and congas created a completely new rhythmic language, laying the foundation for the modern Timba movement. An equally important figure in the development of the band’s signature style, was pianist César “Pupy” Pedroso, widely regarded as the most influential pianist in Cuban popular dance music. His signature contrary motion tumbao style introduced a new approach to rhythm and movement in the piano, setting a creative benchmark that pianists still study today.
